The Theatre was found in 1809. The first perfomance took place on the10th of February 1810. The Russian troupe by Fortunatov staged a one-act opera by Fralih "A New Family" and a vaudeville "A Consolating Widow". In 1873 an old building was burnt and completely restored in October 1887. The building of Odessa Opera and Ballet House has been built in "Baroque" style, which was the main style in the European art from the end of the XVI up to the middle of the XVIII century.
There is a sculptural group over the front, portraying one of the muse, a patroness of art- Melpomena. The building looks great outside, with lots of sculpters around it, but most beautiful part of it is its hall. Made in "Rococo" style, it looks really luxorious.
The stage area is 500 sq.m. Unique acoustic structure of the Theatre allows to deliver even a whisper from the stage to any part of the hall.
Odessa Opera and Ballet Theatre is interesting not only by its architecture, but by its rich creative biography as well.
There are over 25 operas in the repertoire of the Theatre, such as "Carmen", "Il Trovatore", "La Traviata", "I Pagliacci", "Aida", "Iolanta", "Madam Batterfly", Rigoletto", "Cavaleria Rusticana", and others.
