One and a half month ago by the order of the National Bank of Ukraine all foreign exchange transactions were made possible only with a passport. Currency exchange points have started to make a copy of the personal data of the client, and in order to do it they had to buy photocopiers. At first, all people were outraged by such a control, but gradually they become accustomed.
Recently, Kievans have started to complain that it is getting impossible to find a working currency exchange kiosk in Kyiv, as many of them were closed throughout the city. On the kiosk windows you could see just the sign: "Closed"
At the same time, the banks are happy, because they've started to get more clients.
Officialy nobody could explain, what's going on and when these money exchange points will start working again. According to the president of Association of Ukrainian Banks Alexander Sugonyako, in other countries foreign exchange offices are all at the banks, so it is surprising, that we still have money exchange booths.
Vladimir Lanovoy, doctor of economic sciences, deputy city council says, that a chain of technical barriers is created to the public artificially. They demand a person to show the passport, but for various reasons, not everyone has got this document available at any time. They closed convenient places to exchange currency quickly and easily. This led to the fact that people began to exchange less money, preferring to keep them at home. So, because of the decrease in currency exchange transactions, currency exchange kiosks became unprofitable.
