An appropriate Law Project was registered in Ukrainian Parliament on November 17, on the World No Tobacco Day.
The Law Project number 9474 proposes to ban smoking indoors in all public catering facilities, cultural institutions, on sportsgrounds and stadiums. It provides a substantial increase in penalties for the failure to observe relevant legislation - from 1,000 up to 10,000 UAH. The text of the document is not yet published, but its contents were revealed by the press service of the Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Health Tatyana Bakhteyeva (Regions Party), who is among 12 authors of this Law Project.
The authors have noted that the document is intended to satisfy UEFA requirements to completely relieve all Euro-2012 objects of tobacco smoke during the European Football Championship.
Nowadays, in Ukraine there is a smoking ban only in elevators, health care and educational institutions, on playgrounds, in hallways of residential buildings, in subways and public transport.
For the public catering facilities there is a provision on mandatory allocation of 50% of premises for those who do not smoke. "But in practice, to monitor the implementation of this requirement is almost impossible. The adoption of this Law Project will significantly reduce negative effects of tobacco smoke on people", - Tatiana Bakhteyeva summed up.
